a creeping or moving barrage is a type of artillery barrage where the line of fire slowly shifts towards the enemy positions at a predetermined pace with the purpose of providing a screen for the advancing infantry forces behind it first employed by bulgarian artillerists the creeping barrage was extensively used and perfected by the british forces during the great war after normal barrage techniques were proven inadequate notoriously difficult to execute as its required flawless coordination between the artillery and the infantry it wasn't rare for it to fail a famous example being the first time it was employed by the british at the battle of the sob, the advancing infantry force lacked behind the creeping barrage and as a result was left exposed in no man's land, the tactic continues to be used in the future though increasingly less frequently as large concentrations of heavy guns became more scarce。
