hello and welcome a godocks film lighting 101 tonight we'll be experimenting with some night lighting of a car let's check it out so tonight we are out here in the middle of summer in texas and it is hot and the idea here is to film a few abstract sequences of a guy washing his car and i've always been a big fan of these old school vintage car washes they have tons of character and just look awesome under the lights and what's great about these car washes is here in the us you can find them pretty much anywhere so what we're gonna do is we're gonna use some godox lights to transform in everyday location into something a bit more stylized and edgy so a great thing about shooting in a car wash is it gives you multiple options on which bay you want to actually set up your scene so we came over here and we set up here on the end and this just allowed us more freedom and let us place wherever we needed to like in the corners over here and what i liked about every bay of this car wash is that they had these mercury vapor bulbs in each of the corners and what we did is we built off of those practicals and we use godox lights to really enhance those lights for the scene okay, so for starters what better way to highlight an american vintage car wash than with some good ol american muscle, so we have this dodge challenger that was perfect and they fit the bill and what we wanted to do is have our talent just wash his car and kind of be in the zone and just love what he's doing out here so what we really liked about this black car is that you can clearly see the reflections everywhere and to really make this even better is when you add water so water is definitely a great tool for cinematographers if you pay close attention to exterior night scenes in movies or big budget, commercial and even music videos you'll notice most of the time the ground is soaked with water and puddles even when it's a clear night with no signs of brain the use of water helps reflect light which makes things more dynamic and can even add a few extra stops of light to a scene you can add water to pretty much anything like windows cars walls even people if you wanted backlighting water highlights the detail of the water whereas front lighting water can cause it to be nearly invisible of course filming at a car wash can help with all of this but if you find yourself in a remote location you can always bring jugs of water or even water bottles to do the trick also depending on the production budget you can use a water truck to cover large surface areas or ask a local fire department to help you out with access to a fire truck or hydrant tonight we were doing a lot of experimenting and what better way to experiment than shooting handheld and shooting handheld really allows you flexibility to find your shot and kind of get lucky with your composition so i love going handheld it's probably my favorite way to shoot and what we have tonight is we're using the panasonic s1h with a lomo 50 millimeter round front anomorphic lens and using adventures lens really helps compliment adventures location like the one we're at tonight so the first thing we wanted to do was build off the practicals on location so the mercury vapors were up there up high and to basically complement those lights what we wanted to do is add a street lamp kind of motivation and so using a light like the ld 150r is perfect for this so we're able to dial in the hue to exactly the orange tone of an old street lamp and we added a honeycomb and some barn doors and what this is doing is it's containing the light in a narrow pool, so that the light doesn't spill all over the scene and this light will also back light the water which really helps the reflections across the car so from here what we wanted to do was add a little bit of fill light to the environment so we took four godox tl 60s and these lights are really cool because they can serve as practical lights within your scene and i just really like how they look with the antimorphic lens, so i can use a godox light app i can turn them on i can control the hue saturation brightness and what's really handy is when the lights are placed up high like they are right now i can be behind the camera and still control everything with the lights so from there what we wanted to do was compliment the orange tone coming from the ld 150r, so we took a codox sz 150r and this light is full rgb and we thought that a good turquoise type tone would really match the orange, so we have an orange and teal setup so we turn this on and what this light is doing is it's illuminating this bay right here next to the one that we're filming in, but it's also bouncing off of the ceiling to create shadows and then illuminate the car the ground and the subject below so to create balance within our scene we wanted to do on the opposite side of the bay is use a godox s60 focusing light and this light's really cool because it shoots a narrow beam especially with the barn doors attached and it's super high output it really highlights the water which really enhances the texture that's all over the car so to add more of an orange street lamp effect just like the other light we added an amber gel to this one and it just makes it look more realistic in the scene and it helps create balance within the environment for this particular shoot what was really nice is most of these goduk's lights are all battery powered so it allowed us to get more experimental and to quickly set things up and move things around more efficiently so since we are shooting an abstract sequence we're able to shoot kind of out of order and what we did was we shot all of our wides first and then we moved in and shot our close ups inside the car we took the lights that we had already lit up everywhere and we just brought them in closer and we experimented with what was working and where and we just noticed if we move a light a certain direction we could illuminate the water on the windshield a certain way or on the driver side, window or on his face and sometimes that's what's best about not having a set structure is that you can get experimental and you can find the right shot for the right moment so when you're using a lot of lights around a lot of water things can get sketchy really fast so luckily godox did the research and they thought about this what they have now is they have a teal 30 that comes with this cool waterproof bag and so that's really a lifesaver when it comes to filming something like the situation, we find ourselves in right now and what's nice about this is we can set it on a windshield literally wet down the car with the light on the windshield and get all the reflections of the water coming all around it hopefully you can use a few of these lighting techniques to help with filming a car scene at night godox offers a one stop solution for all your filmmaking needs from lights to monitors to audio to stands to grip and staging essentials thank you so much for checking out this episode of godox film lighting 101 we'll see you next time until then happy filmmaking。

hello and welcome to godox film lighting one oh one today, we'll be using moving lights to create an atmospheric daydream in a tiny space let's check it out and go ahead and jam out, even more kind of shake your head left to right yeah perfect that's perfect keep it going, keep it going, keep it going, so like your naturally drumming but you're actually playing the organ as intense as possible like count dracula you can call dracula play the organ who plays the organ there you go you got it for this setup we wanted to create a scene that metaphorically transforms the viewer into the mind of a composer as he creates a song to do this we are using various goduk's lights to move around the space to give the scene a very dreamy and atmospheric feeling using lights that move within your scene can help represent a passing of time a daydream or maybe even a larger than life moment the way the lights illuminate the environment can help drive the story surrounding the actor and can help the audience understand what the character is thinking or feeling within their own imaginary world as for the location we showed up sight unseen and we didn't realize how small the space actually was so today's lesson is gonna be more about how to make a dynamic shoot with a very small location so always make sure that your talent is in good shape, so we can help you move your furniture to really make the scene come to life, so we have cody here he's gonna help us move this super heavy piano and we'll see how it goes so the reason we're moving this is really to give ourselves a little bit more depth, so that we have more depth to filled in our shy and just to make the overall environment seem a lot bigger so our set was a little bland when we first got started what we're gonna do now is we're gonna bring in our own props, i just went to a local department store and bought some little knickknacks it seemed to work just fine we can just stage this however we need to, but i always find that reflective like chrome like this mug right here or even this turquoise bottle stuff like that will really help with distortion in your lenses and really help add some color to your overall image i just like how it kind of looks once it's all thrown together and so we'll set these in the area and we'll play and to see what we get okay so decisions decisions i guess that could live there and this clock could live there, i don't know what to do with this, but what's kind of funny is randomly got this and then the couch happened to be turk boy so it's always nice when things work out for this scene we're shooting on a red komodo with a vase in 28 millimeter anamorphic lens the animorphic lens is brand new and is really cool this is the first shoot that we've actually got to experiment with it really like it so far to soften it up a little bit because it is really sharp actually added a black promised filter the 18 stop version and what this is going to do is soften your image just a little bit to help give your image a more dreamy look so on past that episodes whenever, i'm using animorphic i'm actually using a magnifying glass to get close ups because of the close focus distance, but now with this lens you can use a diopter that can just screw onto the front this is actually a plus two diopter and it just allows you to get even more extreme close ups when using animorphic as far as our key light goes we wanted to add a little bit of extra exposure throughout the overall environment of our scene so we used a godux ul 150 we raised it way up high on a c stand and used the qrp 120 softbox and we put the grid and a cloth on there and that diffuses the light evenly across our subject it really helps bring out a skin tone without casting hard light all across our subject and the rest of the environment one of the challenges whenever, we booked the location is we thought we actually had windows in our scene and turns out there's actually a flat wall in no window for our scene so what we did is we made an adjustment and so a lot of times you're gonna have to make adjustments on the fly on set especially whenever, you've never seen the location before so we needed to create our own fake window and so what we did was we added a godox ld 150r panel light and this is full rgb light it's got millions of color possibilities i can control it with a godox light app and we wanted to make it look like a window so we grab this room divider and we set it up to make it seam as if it was a source that light would actually shine through and this actually has a nice little frosted panel that kind of helps just make it look even more believable within our scene and so we went with that and there's our fake window so we've got a godox ld 150r right back there behind that little panel and that's given us that nice cool blue light and i'm easily able to adjust the color timp with the godox light app that i'm using here and i can see it in real time with my camera setting so that's one really cool thing about being able to use the app as you're looking at your shot in real time the idea here is to build off these practicals so these practicals give off this warm yellow tone and what we're gonna do is we're gonna use mirrors to reflect spotlights onto our scene and what that's gonna do is really just make a more of a daydream type illusion that's going on inside the composer's mind so whenever you're filming in a tiny space one trick that you can use is using mirrors as windows and so we're using this reflective mirror in these godox s60 spotlights and what we're doing is we're moving this light in a direction like so, and it is casting these really cool shadows all across our scene and one other thing is make sure your mirror is nice and dirty with fingerprints all over it yeah that's pretty dirty right here we have two godox s60 spotlights and what these are doing is they're hitting off this mirror and that's projecting all those moving images and shadows across the background of our overall scene and on this specific light right here it has the 85 millimeter lens projection attachment and it has a gobo of a window inserted in there, and a cto gel on the front just to warm up the overall image and this light has the barn doors and more of a wide beam, and that's the help the exposure brighten up just a little bit throughout the overall scene as it hits off the mirror, so it's important to have two different types of projections hitting your mirror because that way there's a difference between each light and so you're not casting the same duplicate image across your background what we have here is the godox tl60 and this is a tube light as rgb can control all kinds of colors with it millions of possibilities and for this what we wanted to do was actually match the tone that was coming from the other practicals in the scene and this light is serving as a nice backlight for our subject so our camera is right over here and so this is helping highlight this area around him and it helps bring him out from the background and also helps compliment the blue tone that we have back here in the background to go along with the theme of moving lights all throughout the background we wanted to add another light to the other side across from the mirror so we have a godox ml sixty this is a battery powered handheld light if you want to hold it handheld which is really cool super bright so what we're gonna do with this one is we're able to move it up and down and what we have here are these trees and these artificial plants placed all on the stand and this is helping cascade different kinds of shadows all across our environment and our subject just to kind of complement the other spotlight stuff that's happening with the mirror on the other side all right here we go everybody positions and in three two one action 啦啦啦啦 啦啦啦啦 hopefully this example of using moving lights in a tiny space can help enhance your scenes for any of your future projects godox offers a one stop solution for all your filmmaking needs from lights to monitors to audio to stands to grip and staging essentials they've definitely thought of everything thank you so much for hanging out and experimenting with us on this episode of godox film lighting 101 we'll see you next time until then happy film making。
