solomon is well known for making high quality mountaineering and outdoor gear, but recently they dipped into the fashion world with the popular gorp core craze it's going on so these xt6s are now somehow a hot ticket item so we're gonna cut them in half run them through our tests to see if they live up to the solomon name or if it's just a quick cash grab on solomon's part to capitalize on the gorp core of craze and if solomon is a sellout, if solomon and how we ended up at this point so it all started in 1947 when fran swa solomon has a small shop in france that he produced his famous beveled ski edges and also in 1947 his son georges decided to join his father's business instead of becoming a teacher like his father wanted he was interested in pursuing skiing as a leisure activity as the nearby mountain villages were starting to install ski lifts and then in 1955 georges invented a ski binding toe piece that combines twisting motion with a forward motion whatever that means and then in 1957 the first ski binding the lift replaces the traditional leather straps on skis a huge success and solomon starts expanding and recruiting and then fast forward 20 years by 1979 solomon launches their first ski boot the sx 90 the first boot with rear entry and heal retention and then in 1980 they launched the sns a revolutionary boot and binding system for nordic skis 1984, solomon invest 350 franks in the ultra modern factory 1990 solomon's first skis the s 9000 has launched 1992 the first adventure rage of hiking boots is launched by solomon 1997 solomon releases its first snowboard and then also in 1997 a adidas by solomon within 2002 the xa pro is released it's a precursor to the trail running shoes like this 2005, a mere sports by solomon from adidas and their us operations are actually just up the road in augdan utah and those same guys a mirror amer also on wilson atomic and arc terex and then finally in 2013 the xt6 line of shoes launches they were meant to be a long distance trail running shoe but for whatever reason it had this cultural breakthrough into the fashion world where people start wearing these just as streetwear and casual wear instead of their intended purpose, so now let's start going to the details of the shoe to really see if it still has the heritage of the trail running shoe or if it's a complete sellout where solomon's like hey these people are just buying these for whatever reason, let's just make them cheap and fast and get them out as soon as possible, so let's start with the upper first, so the upper is made of two main materials a mesh fabric and a tpu abrasion resistant overlay very similar to what we saw in the gps but this tpu overlay looks like a lot better suited for actual wear because those the the gps shoes that are my personal favorite shoe right now they just crack after the very first time you wear them and so we wanted to do a quick abrasion test on this to see if it actually did add some strength to the material, so we mattered in our are really not scientific abrasion test to see how many pounds it took to actually to wear its way through a braid its way through and it took 27 pounds to a braid its way through and then as for the mesh material we were curious how resistant it would be to splitting and unraveling because i thought part of the reason they did this tpu overlay was to add some protection, but also to prevent little splits or little cuts from spreading all the way across the shoe because of how lightweight the upper is so we did a little horizontal cut and a vertical test or cut and try to see if they would come unraveled and they didn't really come unraveled at all and so another thing we wanted to do is see if we heated these up to a certain temperature, if we could get the tpu overlay to come apart and after cranking up that heat gun to seven hundred degrees and put it on it for a long period of time it didn't really delaminate it just started to shrivel and shrink on top of the fabric itself so it seems like the tpu is really well fused to the upper fabric and then just for fun we wanted to see how it react to flame so we put it on the mesh material first and it just went up in a hurry, because it's just like a synthetic mesh and the tpu was a little bit more flame resistant and heat resistant, but ultimately it's it's not really mean for any of that, but it's mostly just interesting to see how it reacts to flame and then we we also wanted to see because it's a trail running shoe you would expect it to have some weather protection properties so i was curious if it was water resistant or waterproof at all did a little raindrop test on it and the drops went straight through to the inside of the shoe, so they're not water resistant in any way, but solomon didn't really claim that, but it's worth mentioning for a shoe like this so for the upper it seems like it's a smart way to design a really lightweight flexible breathable upper by while still maintaining some structural strength with the tpu so now if we start looking at some of these other components on this shoe the tongue is really similar once again to the gps shoes where it's got that that honeycombed foam on the inside with mesh on top and bottom to give you the padding of the tongue with the breathability of mesh so i really like that tongue and then the way that these shoes are tied is really unique because instead of tying it or even like the boa system that we did on the area boot the other day it's similar to the boa, but it's more just like a drawstring, but you'd see like on like hoodies or like snowboard gear where instead of tying them all you do is pull the string up and it cinches it down which is a really cool feature because it allows you to really micro adjust your tightness on your shoe without having to retired several times the only problem is when you pull it tight you're gonna pull so much extra strap above that i don't know if you're supposed to tuck it in, or if you're supposed to like kind of weave it somewhere, but that's the one thing i really didn't like about this because i do like the concept of it and how easy it is to use and so we wanted to test this tying system so first we wanted to just test this string to see how strong it was and the string itself broke at 231 pounds then we hooked it up to an island to see what would fell first whether there's a string or one of these eyelets and it took 19 pounds to break through, but that was the top metal eyelet so we also wanted to test these little strap eyelets that have these unique little inserts on the inside those took 93 pounds to break through so it seems like unless you're really cranking on this you're not going to break the string you're going to break one of the islands before you break the string and then if we start looking at the inside of the shoe it's just lined with the fabric lining there's。
