haha skating backwards is a true joy and it's way easier than you might think for along in this video i take you from your first time skating backwards all the way through to the skills you need to be able to skate around outside on the street make sure you're comfortable with your lemon drops this is a building block for so many of our moves just as important for our backward skating lemon drop is simply feeding a v good balance head up carving the shape of a lemon over top of my cone forward and back lemon drops are so important but i've covered these many times before in previous videos so if this is nothing new to you please feel free to skip ahead look in the description box look in the comments you'll see a timeline skip ahead to what's most appropriate for your skill level if you are new to skating or new to skating backwards spend some time here i promise it will help as we start to get moving backwards that lemon drop is going to be our first break so it's going to be very important before we move on next thing let's do is let's get used to our backward skating stride balance balancing our body a position in our feet like the letter a and then lifting our feet in that a position to create our backward stride here's how you're going to set it up you're going to start with about a basketball size space between your feet knees are going to be slightly inside of our feet creating almost a bit of an a frame here different from the a shape of our feet, but we're putting a little pressure on the inside edge now what if before i get ready to go, i'm gonna make sure my head's in a comfortable position i'm gonna look approximately two meters on the floor in front of me here i'm not gonna worry about looking too high and i don't want to be looking right down at my feet somewhere here is going to work great and now to get moving what i'm going to do is i'm going to transfer weight to one side pick one foot up and i'm going to turn that toe in and it's a rotation of the hip that gets that foot in the right position okay, balance a and lift now soon as i start to get a few butterflies right into that lemon drop to work on this technique by going forward and back in a space that's fairly flat where you have quite a bit of room to work so in this position now i'm going to go forward position skate skate skate chop chop as i chop positioning those feet into that a immediately that makes me want to move back skate skate skate lemon bo i'm gonna take it back forward sometimes when we're learning something new we become so obsessed with the technical aspects of what we're trying to do that too much of our brain power is thinking and not enough of it is doing so do something like this counter steps going forward counter steps going back and focus on that number instead of all the technical things you know go forward a couple steps go back a couple steps right and count how many you can do and then try and beat it next time okay so now let's go back to that lemon drop we're going to connect our lemons together now we're trying to do two or three or four into one nice smooth motion now this exercise is absolutely key if you want to be up to skate nice and smoothly backwards now the key to this exercise is a hip rotation so as my feet return as my heels come back together underneath my body right here they have to be able to kick back out into the next lemon in order for this to happen this hip rotation i have to have the weight in my toes and there has to be a slight decompression almost an unwaiting of my heels kind of like a tiny little jump practice this in your socks on your carpet kicking your heels in and out and feel what's happening here you have to push down with your toes and you have to lift up to get your heels off the floor in order to kick them out and back in it feels like you're putting out a cigarette bud or squishing a bug on the floor okay so now i've got the hang of moving backwards i've done some drills i'm feeling comfortable now what i want to do is make sure that i'm feeling comfortable looking over my shoulder as i start to skate backwards so important if you want to be able to do this in the middle of one of your flow skates to do this what i'm gonna say to myself is lemon look lift i'm gonna use that lemon drop to get myself gliding backwards i'm gonna look behind me by putting my chin towards my shoulder i'm going to look not trying to turn my head in a big way where i'm creating too much rotation i'm just trying to look over to the side and with the peripheral vision i can see most of what's behind me here let's give it a try okay balance lemonade look left okay now one fatal flaw that i see in so many people skating including my own is we get comfortable looking one direction for me over my left shoulder and we're not really comfortable looking the other way which in some cases you end up in a position where you find yourself here and then all of a sudden you've got to try and look this way and as you change that perspective you're in a blind spot for a second it causes panic maybe you trip and fall so let's make sure we practice it both ways okay lemon look
