Mars has two unusually shaped moons: Phobos and Deimos. Both are very small and irregular, resembling giant space "potatoes." Most scientists believe they were not formed in orbit around Mars but were captured from the asteroid belt. Phobos, orbiting just about 9,200 km above Mars, is gradually spiraling inward due to tidal forces. It is approaching Mars at a rate of about 2 cm per year and is expected to either disintegrate into a ring or crash into the planet within the next 50 million years. Deimos, being smaller and farther out, is slowly drifting away from Mars and may eventually escape its gravitational pull. These moons provide key insights into Mars’s history and the dynamic processes of our solar system.#英语学习
